Plantain - Healing Properties

Plantain - Healing Properties

The leaves of Plantain Leaf (Plantago major) are packed with phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals. It’s been used for centuries to heal wounds, soothe irritation, and reduce inflammation. The leaves contain allantoin… so important in promoting skin cell regeneration AKA collagen boosting! While not as potent as comfrey in this factor, it makes up for it by containing antioxidant lutein, which helps protect against blue light: High-Energy Visible (HEV) but more about this next month, when we explore natural sunscreen.

Skin Conditions

The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of Plantain make it an excellent choice for treating acne, eczema, and other skin conditions that cause redness and swelling while also fighting off harmful bacteria. If you experience any of these, take a peek at our Scar Healing Balm.

Plantain is moisturizing, which is a welcome relief from our hot, dry Australian climate. It is a natural emollient, which means it can provide your skin with deep hydration, leaving it soft and supple. Incorporating it into our Sun Guard 30SPF is achieved by infusing it into our carrier oils. It's perfect for those with dry or sensitive skin.

Plantain is also naturally rich in antioxidants, which help shield your skin from free radical damage, slowing down the aging process and helping you maintain a healthy skin glow. Why else would we so lovingly grow it? Well yes, our bees love it too!

DIY: Plantain Leaf Products

  • Make your own infused oil, steeping the dried leaves in a carrier oil for 4 weeks,  Apply a few drops to your skin as a nourishing moisturizer.
  • Create a soothing Plantain Leaf face mask by mixing dried plantain leaf powder with water or yogurt. Apply to your face for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing off.

As always, when trying any new skin care, first try on a small patch of skin. We are complex chemical beings; so too are plants!
