This Australian native has fortunately been retrieved from the brink of extinction! Aniseed myrtle, Syzygium anisatum (syd-gee-um an-ee-say-tum) -or- Tucker Bush, is an aromatic native of the NSW tropical rainforest. Fortunately, it can grow well in other climates with sufficient water, (to approx 10 meters, not to the rainforest giant height of 45 meters).
Steady leaf snipping encourages it to bush out. The young leaves are tender, moist and oh so delicious eaten straight or used in teas, cooking, bread, and yes I will be distilling this little beauty because: The essential oil and the dried leaves contain a wide spectrum of health and skin enhancing properties.
Anti-inflammatory Properties:
Syzygium anisatum contains some strikingly valuable compounds: Its flavonoid anethole can help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain (local anaesthetic), has anti-tumour and anti-cancer action and promotes healing with little or no side effects. It is often used in traditional remedies for sore throats and respiratory issues, so it will be a welcome addition to our current Sore Throat Spray and Head Cold Relief.
Its methyl chavicol denotes its unique anise flavour and aroma, for which it is used extensively in foods, perfumes, and contributes to its medicinal and skincare benefits.
Antimicrobial Activity:
The essential oil exhibits strong antimicrobial and antifungal properties, making it a promising natural ingredient in fighting infections and improving overall immune health and will be included into Nail Guard, and our Herbal Tea range.
Digestive Aid:
The aromatic compounds, particularly anethole, aid digestion by reducing bloating, improving the digestive process and soothing gastrointestinal discomfort.
Skincare Benefits:
Hydration and Nourishment:
Aniseed myrtle is packed with vitamins and essential oils that deeply hydrate and nourish the skin, promoting a healthy complexion and helping combat dryness.
Anti-Aging Properties:
The antioxidants in Syzygium anisatum fight free radicals, reducing those tell-tale fine lines and wrinkles. It helps maintain skin elasticity and radiance by supporting (that very important…) collagen production!
Anti-Acne Action:
With its antimicrobial properties, Syzygium anisatum is effective in reducing acne-causing bacteria. It calms inflamed skin, helping to soothe and clear breakouts. Look out for my ‘updated’ Cleo Cleanser & Face Toner in 2025.
Natural Fragrance and Calming Effects:
The plant’s soothing anise scent has a calming, aromatherapeutic effect. Yet another excellent reason to incorporate it into Skyezone’s natural products.
As awareness of plant-based wellness grows, Aniseed Myrtle -Syzygium anisatum is gaining popularity for its holistic medicinal and skincare benefits, which have certainly attracted me to growing it. It won't be long before you might be enjoying its benefits in several Skyezone products! Perhaps you might like one to enhance your daily menu? The bees will be delighted when it flowers too!
