Essentials Oils with their unique chemistry and small molecular structure can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), most effectively through inhalation. Odour molecules dissolve in the lining of your nasal cavity, stimulating the olfactory receptors, which are directly connected to brain cells.
Thankfully essential oils act as neuroprotective agents by reducing oxidative stress and acting as antioxidants. They help protect nerve cells in the brain from damage and death.
Essential oils are both fat-soluble and comprised of extremely small molecules, making them an ideal remedy to access and heal regions of the brain affected by physical toxins and emotional and mental stress.
We know that different essential oils promote neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to adapt and change) ie, Lavender can enhance memory and improve cognitive performance. Lotus can aid cognitive awareness, and each oil has its unique properties.
Scent is carried to your olfactory cortex and the limbic area of the brain which serves as the control centre in the brain for emotions, feelings and psychological responses, along with hunger, thirst and sex drive. This helps explain how scent can influence appetite and sexual attraction!
With essentials oils offering a powerful connection between scent and brain chemistry, and over all well-being. See our current Perfume Category
Lotus, Escape, and Karma perfumes, now join our long term: Rose, Lavender & Sweet Dreams perfumes, all with 100% natural & therapeutic essential oils.
Being true perfumes, they are concentrated and supplied in a roll-on, with just a touch to pulse points being sufficient as potent perfumes… ahhh.
Formulating Perfume
To blend natural essential oils into a captivating perfume is perhaps an art, a skill, but there are some basic rules that can help with creating your own.
1. Decide what is the purpose of your creation?
2. Research which oils may provide the properties you seek.
3. Are the oils selected compatible? Do they blend well together?
4. Consider if you have: Top, Middle and Base Notes?
A perfume essential oil ratio starting point is: Top 35% Mid 50% Base 15%
These percentages are general rule of thumb but don't be afraid to experiment.
Essential oil is the most expensive ingredient that goes into fragrances. You can expect to pay the most for perfume(12-18% of essential oil ), and less for eau de toilette( 8-12% of essential oil).
Other ingredients in perfume are generally:
- Perfume alcohol : Ethanol Absolute 99.8% pure alcohol, which acts as the volatile carrier and evaporates off the skin quickly, leaving the essential oils to be absorbed into the skin. Vodka may be used as a substitute for experimenting. This 'carrier' evaporates quickly, leaving the essential oils to absorb into the skin or fabric.
- A solubliser which helps blend the oils evenly and reduces any dryness on the skin.
- A high Vitamin E Tocopherol which acts as an antioxidant for the essential oils and along with the ethanol, helps preserve shelf life. A Batch number maybe given rather than and Expiry or Best Before date (BB) .
All Skyezone perfumes contain: Ethanol Absolute 99.8% - known as perfume's alcohol; Solublizer, and a high quality Vit E Tocopherol 70% . These percentages are not the formulation measurments but indicate the quality of the product.
Remember that perfume essential oil blends take a good 2 weeks or more to achieve their true scent. That first sniff is not the ultimate result, but you have to start somewhere!
Creating Your Own Fragrance
- Research Essential Oil NOTES: Base, Middle and Top
- Ask yourself, what is the purpose of your perfume? ie, A Specific Scent, A Blend, Aid Concentration, Help Calm, Reduce Menopause Symptoms....
This will help you focus and select the essential oils you want to use. Select carefully as it can be overwhelming! - Prepare an accurate ( jewellery) measuring scale or dropper(s) to assist. Write each version of your formula.
- For storing notes or creating a database (shared across your devices) consider the free cloud based program: Notion, it's brillaint!
- A glass mixing vial or beaker and non platastic stirrer.
- Glass container(s) to store your creations ( and label & date them clearly)
- Test the fragrance over time, as it takes at least 2 weeks for a perfume to mature.
- Always store essential oils in glass to preserve quality and fragrance. Never use plastic which it will 'eat' and contaminate the perfume.
- If you need access to Essential Oils or Containers don't hesitate to ask.
- Enjoy and revel in your creations!
Wishing you wonderful adventures in the realm of scent.
