Making Plantain Hydrosol
The distillation process involves harvesting the plant material, typically when it's in full bloom and 70% flowering, for the best quality hydrosol, and then using steam to extract the beneficial compounds from the leaves and stems. The hydrosol is then stored in glass, in a cool dark area.
Plantago major hydrosol contains these in trace, water -soluble fractions:
- Aucubin — an iridoid glycoside with strong wound‑healing, anti‑inflammatory, and antimicrobial activity
- Verbascoside (Acteoside) — a caffeic‑acid derivative with antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory, and skin‑repair properties
- Caffeic‑acid derivatives — broad antioxidant and soothing activity, common in Plantago species
- Flavonoids (including luteolin, quercetin, rutin) — antioxidant and barrier‑supporting compounds
- Hydrolysable tannins — astringent, wound‑healing, and antimicrobial activity
