Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are the unsung heroes of the skincare world

Carrier oils are the unsung heroes of the skincare world. Derived from a plants seeds, kernels, or nuts, these oils serve as the "base" or "vehicle" that carries potent essential oils and extracts into the skin. Unlike essential oils, carrier oils do not evaporate and are rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that nourish the skin's lipid barrier. Think of them as "food" for your skin, providing the structural support and hydration needed for a healthy, glowing complexion.

Plant

Arnica (Montana) CO2 Extract
(Arnica montana)

  • The Chemistry: Extracted via supercritical CO_2 technology, this is a highly concentrated version of the plant’s fat-soluble components, specifically sesquiterpene lactones (like helenalin) and flavonoids
  • Properties: Potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain-relieving), and anti-ecchymotic (bruise-reducing).
  • Benefits: Exceptional for soothing muscle aches, reducing swelling, and accelerating the healing of bruises. A CO2 extract is much more potent than a standard infused oil.
  • Products: Used in our Feeling Sore! lotion.
  • Safety: For external use only. Do not apply to broken skin or open wounds.

Plant

Evening Primrose Oil (Refined)
(Oenothera biennis)

  • The Chemistry: One of the few significant sources of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), an Omega-6 fatty acid essential for skin structure
  • Properties: Anti-inflammatory, structural regenerator, and skin-softener
  • Benefits: Specifically beneficial for dry, itchy, or "mature" skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Refined oil is lighter in colour and scent, ensuring it doesn't overpower a product
  • Products: Used in our face moisturisers & Serenity Lotion and sold separately
  • Safety: Safe for topical use. Those with very oily skin should use it sparingly as it is a "richer" oil

Plant

Grapeseed Oil (Pure)
(Vitis vinifera)

  • The Chemistry: Extremely high in linoleic acid (Omega-6) and contains significant amounts of Vitamin E
  • Properties: Astringent, ultra-lightweight, and fast-absorbing
  • Benefits: Often called a "dry oil" because it sinks in instantly without leaving a greasy residue. It helps to tighten the skin and close pores, making it the perfect carrier for oily or teenage skin types
  • Products: Used in our toning Spring Step Oil , Cleo Cleanser and Face Scrub
  • Safety: Very safe for all skin types and should be stored in a cool, dark place

Plant

Jojoba Oil
(Simmondsia chinensis)

  • The Chemistry: Technically a liquid wax ester rather than an oil, making its chemical structure almost identical to human sebum
  • Properties: Biomimetic (mimics skin), pH balancing, and being an ester it is highly stable
  • Benefits: Because the skin "recognizes" it as its own oil, Jojoba penetrates deeply and helps regulate oil production
  • Products: Used across our product range, from Face Creams to Lip Balms
  • Safety: Hypoallergenic and safe for even the most sensitive or reactive skin

Plant

Hazelnut Oil
(Corylus avellana)

  • The Chemistry: Contains high levels of oleic acid and is a natural source of tannins
  • Properties: Astringent, stimulating, and deeply penetrating
  • Benefits: Known as the "oily skin savior," its astringent properties help tone the skin and shrink pores. It stimulates the circulatory system, helping to move toxins and improve skin vibrancy
  • Products: Used in some of our body products
  • Safety: Not suitable for those with a known nut allergy

Plant

Macadamia Oil
(Macadamia integrifolia)

  • The Chemistry: High in Palmitoleic acid (Omega-7), a fatty acid that naturally occurs in our skin but which decreases as we age
  • Properties: Rejuvenating, protective, and deeply nourishing
  • Benefits: This is a "bio-identical" oil for aging skin. It provides a protective barrier against moisture loss and helps to "plump" the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Products: Important for our Hand Repair and Body Butters
  • Safety: Not suitable for those with nut allergies.

Plant

MCT Oil
(Medium-Chain Triglyceride - Fractionated Coconut Oil)
(Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides)

  • The Chemistry: A fraction of coconut oil where the long-chain fatty acids are removed, leaving only the medium-chain triglycerides
  • Properties: Completely liquid at room temperature, odorless, and indefinitely shelf-stable
  • Benefits: It provides a silky, "slip" feel to products without being greasy. Because it is so stable, it is the perfect carrier for botanical infusions where you want a long shelf life
  • Products: Used in our Karma & Ginkgo infused oils, Sun Guard and as an infusion oil for Mulberry and Plantain
  • Safety: Extremely safe. Unlike raw coconut oil, MCT is generally non-comedogenic ( so it does not block pores)

Plant

Rosehip Oil
(Rosa canina / Rosa rubiginosa)

  • The Chemistry: High in trans-retinoic acid (a natural form of Vitamin A) and Vitamin C
  • Properties: Tissue-regenerative, brightening, and anti-scarring
  • Benefits: The ultimate oil for "skin repair." It is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and hyperpigmentation. It promotes rapid cell turnover
  • Products: Found in our Face moisturisers and Scar Healing Balm and also sold separately
  • Safety: Can be "active" on the skin; sensitive users should introduce it slowly.

Plant

Sunflower Oil
(Helianthus annuus)

  • The Chemistry: Exceptionally high in linoleic acid, which is critical for maintaining the skin's barrier function
  • Properties: Barrier-repairing, soothing, and anti-inflammatory
  • Benefits: Often overlooked, but it is one of the best oils for restoring a "broken" skin barrier. It helps the skin retain moisture and protects against bacteria
  • Products: A gentle base for our Baby range and Everyday Moisturisers
  • Safety: Extremely safe and low-allergy potential
