Plantain has an excellent & versatile range of skin care properties. Anti-inflammatory, Moisturising, Wound Healing...and more

At Skyezone we cultivate Plantain (Plantago) and produce the hydrosol through steam distillation.  Also known as plantain water, it is a gentle and versatile skincare product with several benefits.
How Plantain Hydrosol can aid in skincare:

Anti-inflammatory: Plantain hydrosol can help soothe irritated skin, making it beneficial for conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and minor burns.

Wound healing: Thanks to compounds like allantoin, it promotes cell regeneration, helping to heal cuts, scrapes, and reduce the appearance of scars.

Moisturizing: Its emollient properties help to moisturize dry, chapped skin, providing a soothing and softening effect.

Antimicrobial: It has natural antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities, making it effective against acne-causing bacteria.

Antioxidant: The antioxidant properties protect the skin from free radical damage and environmental stressors.

Calming itchiness: It can provide relief from itchiness and irritation caused by insect bites, rashes, or allergic reactions.

How to incorporate plantain hydrosol into your skincare routine:

Toner: After cleansing your face, spray plantain hydrosol onto a cotton pad and gently swipe it over your skin. This helps balance pH levels and preps your skin for moisturizer.

Facial Mist: Pour plantain hydrosol into a spray bottle and use it as a refreshing facial mist throughout the day. It's great for calming your skin and providing a moisture boost.

Mask Activator: Use plantain hydrosol to mix with powdered face masks, such as clay or charcoal masks. This can enhance the soothing and healing properties of your mask.

After-Sun Care: Spray or apply the hydrosol to your skin after sun exposure to reduce inflammation and hydrate your skin.

Spot Treatment: Dab a bit of plantain hydrosol directly onto blemishes or insect bites to reduce redness and irritation.

Bath Soak: Add a few cups of plantain hydrosol to your bathwater for an overall skin-soothing experience.

Compress: Soak a clean cloth in plantain hydrosol and apply it to irritated areas for a cooling, calming effect.

These are just a few ways to harness the benefits of plantain hydrosol for your skincare regimen.

Making Plantain Hydrosol
The distillation process involves harvesting the plant material, typically when it's in full bloom and 70% flowering, for the best quality hydrosol, and then using steam to extract the beneficial compounds from the leaves and stems. The hydrosol is then stored in glass, in a cool dark area.

Plantago major hydrosol contains these in trace, water -soluble fractions:

  1. Aucubin — an iridoid glycoside with strong wound‑healing, anti‑inflammatory, and antimicrobial activity
  2. Verbascoside (Acteoside) — a caffeic‑acid derivative with antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory, and skin‑repair properties
  3. Caffeic‑acid derivatives — broad antioxidant and soothing activity, common in Plantago species
  4. Flavonoids (including luteolin, quercetin, rutin) — antioxidant and barrier‑supporting compounds
  5. Hydrolysable tannins — astringent, wound‑healing, and antimicrobial activity

Soothes irritation — calms redness, reduces surface inflammation, and settles reactive skin thanks to aucubin’s anti‑inflammatory activity.

Supports skin repair — verbascoside and tannins help accelerate recovery in compromised or stressed skin.

Antioxidant protection — caffeic‑acid derivatives and flavonoids defend against environmental stressors.

Gentle antimicrobial action — helps keep the skin’s surface clean and balanced without harshness.

Mild astringent effect — tightens and tones the skin, useful for oily or combination types.

Barrier support — reduces transepidermal irritation and helps maintain a calmer, more resilient complexion.

Suitable for sensitive skin — hydrosol form is gentle, low‑irritant, and ideal for soothing formulas.

Contains, but not limited to:

  • Plantain Hydrosol — contains aucubin and verbascoside, known for calming, repairing, and antioxidant activity.

Organic Plant Hydrosols

We organically grow our herbs on-site and extract them through gentle steam distillation to capture these pure, nutrient-rich hydrosols.

By harvesting the plants when they are at 75% flowering, we ensure they are at their absolute peak potency to release active, therapeutic bio-compounds.

They can be used both externally to balance, hydrate, and refresh the skin—either on their own or mixed with your existing skincare—and internally to infuse foods or drinks with natural botanical benefits.

Because we use these premium hydrosols extensively as the foundational base for our own product range, retail availability depends strictly on the plants' preferred growing seasons and what we have to spare from our small-batch harvests.
